No pretenses, so steadfast
I try to edit, eyes downcast
So stoic, ignore the right things
I'm a hot mess, wanting everything
So simple, no feelings
I overlove, hit the ceiling
Stay invisible, give nothing real
I almost wish I couldn't feel
Keep it guarded, no one comes in
And I never learn, just keep runnin'
Just shrug it off, the most withdrawn
I take it in, cry out till dawn
Make no promises, not a word now
I write it out, to be heard somehow
Days, weeks go by, not a thought I'm sure
I think too much, haven't found a cure
Lost faith in all, make no sudden moves
I wonder what the stone heart proves
Waste no energy, on things that matter not
I feel too much, I laugh a lot
Simmer down now, keep it quiet
I can't do that, won't even try it
Just sit there and watch days pass
I lean into it, goes by too fast
Force of habit, hold your tongue now
I can't stop it now, I've forgotten how
Ready to be gone, clean the place out
I just want to give, what I'm all about
Not another thought, don't remember you
I'm not too surprised since they never do...
hmph-title shamelessly ripped off from Christina Perry's song Jar of Hearts
Hint-a line for you a line for me

After reading your hint and going back, I definitely see the back and forth! I'm almost ashamed that I didn't get it the first time around, smack me down.

I'm usually pretty picky about rhyming poetry, I feel like it has the potential to be kind of childish in its way (mostly because I recall poetry assignments in elementary school where I was convinced that a poem HAD to rhyme in order to be considered poetry in the first place), but you take a rhyming method with this piece and you hit it right out of the park. Taking the line for them and the line for you and making them rhyme really tied them together, connected them and fueled that back-and-forth that you were aiming for.

The last two lines - "Not another thought, don't remember you/ I'm not too surprised since they never do..." - was just very raw, and it really brought home the conversation and conflict between the two individuals that you're presenting in this, and it was a brilliant way to end it.
